Our Story

In March of 2020, COVID-19 began to spread worldwide. Derrick and Kyron were seeking ways to stay fit and safe, while being outdoors. With this in mind the two of us, along with two other cyclists went to the VA Capital Trail for a ride. After that ride we shared our experience with other friends. We hit the trail again with Damon & his son joining us. People wanted to join us, but they were skeptical about purchasing a bike. Eventually, they were convinced to get a bike, and they joined us on the trail.

On May 9th, everyone hit the trail and we posted photos of our ride on Instagram. Out of fun, a group chat was created and was named Urban Cycling Group. We continued to ride and post on Instagram, and we started gaining attention from others who wanted to participate. From there we decided to create the Urban Cycling Group Instagram page to inform those interested in riding with us when we were going to ride and to post our cycling experiences. On Memorial Day weekend, we held our first organized group ride on the Capital Trail with about 20 riders. Our next ride we had a group of 50 plus riders. From that point, Urban Cycling Group was launched.
